The Coining of Argent

“Prophecies are one thing, the economy is another.”

My children have created a webcomic that they are working on together. It’s called The Coining of Argent, and the first chapter, “The Winds of Fortune,” is almost complete. I’m a biased mom, but I’m impressed.

For one thing, they are being extremely consistent with it. They put out a new page every Sunday, and I don’t think they’ve missed a week since they started in March.

Petra is doing the backgrounds, and basing them largely on our adventures in Morocco and Portugal. I love the detail in her shading and perspective.

I think she is also doing the story boarding, but I’m a little unclear on that.

Silvie is doing the character art. They communicate so much, so powerfully, through gesture, posture, facial details.

Silvie is also running their social media, posting hints, spoilers, and new page announcements on Instagram.

They are writing the dialog and the plot together. They talk about it a ton, and debate, and dispute, and resolve. Silvie identified a few years ago that their true super power is collaboration, and, knowing that, they are doing a great job of creating situations where they create with a partner or group. This level of self-understanding is one of the true surprises about my children. They both understand themselves, what they need to be successful, and how to get it, at a level that is very different from any of my college-age students.

With their permission, I’m sharing a few favorite images, but you should definitely check out the whole story. Don’t miss their “DAMN” (Digressions and Ancillary Material? Nice!”) page for alternate versions of stories, bonus characters, and other details.

An example of DAMN content—the low-down on “coins” by Petra

There’s also a great characters page, including a portrait of my personal favorite lil guy, Abdelrahim.
